One day, a trusted Muslim merchant was preparing for a journey. He left his shop in the care of his worker, trusting him to manage sales honestly.
Soon after, a Jewish man came to the shop and bought a garment that had a hidden flaw, which the worker did not point out.
When the merchant returned, he noticed the garment was missing. His worker explained he had sold it to a Jewish man for three thousand dirhams, without mentioning its defect.
The Pursuit of Honesty
The honest merchant was displeased. He asked where the man had gone, and learned he had joined a traveling caravan.
Taking the money, the merchant immediately set out to catch the caravan. He rode for three long days until he finally caught up with them.
He found the Jewish man and explained, ‘You bought a garment from my shop that had a defect. Please take your dirhams back and give me the garment.’
The Revelation of Truth and Faith
The Jewish man was astonished and asked why he would do this. The merchant replied, ‘My religion commands honesty and forbids betrayal. Indeed, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: «مَنْ غَشَ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي»’ (He who deceives is not one of us).
Deeply impressed, the Jewish man confessed that the dirhams he had paid the worker were counterfeit. He then gave the merchant real money instead.
Then, overwhelmed by the merchant’s pure character, the Jewish man declared, ‘I submit to the Lord of the worlds, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Messenger.’
