The Unpayable Debt: A Mother’s Love and Sacred Rights
Imagine a journey of ultimate devotion, circling the Holy Kaaba with your beloved mother on your shoulders. This powerful story from Islamic tradition reveals the immeasurable sacrifice of mothers and the profound respect we owe them. Discover the timeless wisdom shared by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about a mother’s enduring love and the sacred rights she holds.
The Sacred Burden
Long ago, a man carried his beloved mother on his shoulders as they performed Tawaf, walking around the Holy Kaaba in Makkah. This incredible act of devotion beautifully showed his deep love and respect for his mother during their sacred journey, a truly humbling sight for all who witnessed it.

After they finished their sacred rounds, the man approached Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a heartfelt question. He humbly asked, ‘Have I now fulfilled my mother’s rights with this great effort?’ He sought guidance on the true meaning of parental respect and devotion.
A Mother’s Unpayable Sacrifice
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) replied with profound wisdom: ‘No, not even for one sigh of pain she felt during your birth!’ This powerful answer highlights the immense sacrifice mothers make, especially during childbirth, reminding us of an unpayable debt of love and dedication.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us that a mother’s struggles, especially during childbirth and raising her children, are immense and beyond measure. This divine wisdom, which emphasizes the great importance of mothers, is also echoed in the Holy Qur’an, guiding us towards ultimate kindness to parents.
Allah reminds us in the Holy Qur’an: ﴿وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ إِحْسَانًا حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا﴾ [الأحقاف: ١٥]. This verse means, ‘We have enjoined upon man kindness to his parents. His mother carried him with difficulty and gave birth to him with difficulty, and his gestation and weaning are thirty months.’ It truly emphasizes the mother’s immense burden, the patience she endures, and the deep respect she deserves.
